The Importance Of Hot Tub Insulation

hot tub insulation cut awayWhen it comes to buying a new hot tub, one important deciding factor should always be considered; Hot tub insulation is offered in different forms by different manufacturers. Unfortunately, not all spa manufacturers see eye-to-eye on hot tub insulation. While some of the higher quality brands like Jacuzzi offer high-density and fully foamed hot tub insulation, other “budget” brands often substitute the latter for an inexpensive alternative which sacrifices the end user experience. Long term cost of ownership is ultimately determined by how efficient your appliances operate, and insulation is a major factor for anything that regulates heat. While it’s true that hot tub insulation is mainly about keeping hot water hot by providing thermal protection, it’s much more than that alone. You see, when the components of a spa turn on, such as the pumps -and in some cases air blowers- they naturally generate movement and vibration which in turn can cause the plumbing of the spa to also vibrate, often substantially. Without adequate hot tub insulation, this vibration can put undue stress on the plumbing and jets, which unfortunately can result in the need for costly repairs which could have otherwise been avoided. When installed correctly, fully foamed hot tub insulation will absorb those vibrations and prevent the stress on the plumbing fittings and jet backs. This will ultimately lead to a longer lifespan of the hot tub and more time spent enjoying your Jacuzzi rather than fixing it! Also, if you’re looking for even more hot tub insulation, Jacuzzi offers an added layer called SmartSeal as an optional upgrade. Not only is this a great choice for those who live in colder climates, but it’s also great as a sound barrier if you’re going to be installing your Jacuzzi somewhere where noise is a concern like just outside of a bedroom or on/in a deck.

With the same overall dimensions as the J-415 model, and the same electrical requirements as the J-315 hot tub, the Jacuzzi J-215 is the small, 120v spa for the minimalist.  Don’t let that fool you though. This spa still packs lots of standard features like ClearRay UV-C Water Management, premium insulation, and LED lighting, the J-215 is still an absolute treat for anybody who enjoys a nice soak.

When somebody looks at small, budget friendly hot tubs, it’s easy to see some are devoid of creature comforts. Introducing The Jacuzzi J-225 Hot Tub

Jacuzzi J-225 Hot Tub

With 2016 rapidly coming to a close, Jacuzzi is unveiling a few 2017 models early.  Among them, is the all new J-225 hot tub.  This is a smaller model fulfilling a slot in the J-200 Collection not seen for quite some time.  This model measures 76” wide and is 84” long making it capable of seating four adults in comfort. The J-225 also has a new design feature, the “pivot-bench,” which gives you the ability to choose between a traditionally style seat or lounge seating with losing any seating capacity.

Like the other spas in the J-200 series of spas, the J-225 comes packed with the standard features most people find they simply cannot live without. For instance, this model comes with the tried and true ClearRay Water Management System factory installed to reduce the amount of sanitizer required to keep your hot tub clean. The J-225 also has LED lighting, stainless steel jetting, premium insulation, and the same shell construction as larger, more expensive Jacuzzi models.  On top of all that, this small hot tub is super easy to setup with the included 120v cord. Just fill it up, plug it in, and enjoy at home hydrotherapy to help you sleep better, feel better, and relax more.

4 Person Hot Tub

Jacuzzi J-245 4 person hot tub

The Real 4 Person Hot Tub

When is a 6 person hot tub not a 6 person hot tub? When it’s a 4 person hot tub! I know it sounds weird but let me explain. It is not uncommon to read a brochure and look at a hot tub that is 7′ X 7′ (84″ X 84″) only to look at the “seats” or “seating capacity” section and see “6” or “6 adults.”

While a hot tub of that size may in fact have a total of 6 seats in it, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can actually fit 6 adults in it. Well, not comfortably anyway. The reality is, a hot tub of that size is a real and true 4 person hot tub. Four people means 8 legs and 8 legs need a lot of space. Plus, if you have a hot tub with a lounge seat, then you are going to find in some cases, even 4 people is a tight fit.

That said, think about how you are going to use your hot tub. Is it going to be you and your significant other 95% of the time? Then maybe you have 4+ people in there once or twice a year? Thats great because that how most people use their hot tub. In that case, a 7′ x 7′ hot tub without a lounge seat, like our J-345, would be perfect for the way you use your hot tub. Would you like a hot tub with a lounge though? Then we would probably recommend going a size up to our J-355 model.

Now, for those of you that truly want the ability to seat 6 people in your hot tub on a regular basis, then our recommendation would be to go no smaller than something like our J-385. In fact, the J-495 would really be the best way to accommodate that number of people on a regular basis. All that said, the best way to decide what will work best for you is see the spas in person and maybe even take a test soak. Contact us today for more info.

In-Ground Hot Tub vs. Portable Spa

In-Ground Hot Tub vs Portable Hot Tub

In-Ground Hot Tub vs Portable Spa

The first thing most people think of when they think of a hot tub is the in-ground spa they used on vacation at the hotel. When they start the process of adding a hot tub to their backyard, most people first consider an in-ground unit. Aesthetically, it’s pleasing to the eye and can blend seamlessly into your yard. However, once people find out just how expensive an in-ground hot tub is (think $20,000-35,000 here in San Diego County), their quest for backyard hydrotherapy ends.

While there are tons of other reasons to consider a portable hot tub, the benefits of an above ground unit over an in-ground go far beyond cost.  Yes, owning and installing a portable hot tub costs far, far less than an in-ground unit. You also have the benefit of a hot tub that is always hot and always ready for you to use it.  No need to crank up the heat and wait hours for the spa get hot. It’s ready when you are. Once you get in, you will also notice the gentle curves and contours of a portable hot tub make it much more comfortable to sit and relax in. This isn’t just another concrete box. Plus, an above ground hot tub, particularly the Jacuzzi Brand, are packed with extraordinary hydrotherapy jets designed to massage, soothe, and relax your muscles. This is a huge departure from the offerings of an in-ground hot tub.

That brings us back to the way an in-ground spa looks vs a portable spa.  Yes, there was a time where portable hot tubs were unsightly. The time has since passed.  When looking. At a brand such as Jacuzzi, you have a vast selection of models wrapped in contemporary cabinetry for a stylish look. For those truly looking for a hot tub that can be part of a backyard centerpiece,  look no further than Jacuzzi’s LX and J500 Collection Hot Tubs. These are the perfect combination hot and ready when you want hydrotherapy and beautiful, contemporary style.

All that said, some people want to know if it possible to put a portable spa in-ground. Absolutely, stay tuned for more information on how to properly install a portable hot tub into an in-ground vault.

Hot Tub Electrical

Jacuzzi Hot Tub Electrical

Hot Tub Electrical

Since this topic is absolutely unavoidable when shopping for a hot tub, we thought it would be a good idea to take a deep dive and explain. When it comes to hot tub electrical, there are two types used and what we we call a couple sub-categories.

6560-024 120v hot tub electrical cordFirst, you are going to have 120v electrical. This is is the same kind of power that energizes the plugs you normally use in your home to power things like a toaster, hair dryer, or even a television. It is important to note that even though you may already have this in your backyard, it may not be suitable for a 120v hot tub. The length of your electrical run is going to determine the gauge of wire needed to operate a hot tub at a certain amperage rating (note: while Jacuzzi’s 120v Hot Tubs operate on a 15a circuit, some brands require a 20a service). So, in this case, it is recommended that an electrician verify your outdoor plug is capable of handling those electrical loads. You also want to install a weatherproof, outdoor electrical cover for your outlet which can be found at most hardware stores.

The second type of hot tub electrical, and the most common, used for out door hot tubs is 240v. There are generally three different variations of this used:

  • 3-wire 240v used on Jacuzzi’s dedicated 240v hot tubs (1 ground wire, 2 hot wires)
  • 4-wire 240v used on Jacuzzi’s convertible models (J-315, J-325, J-210) and many other brands (1 ground, 1 neutral, 2 hot wires)
  • 6-wire 240v used on a couple other industry brands (2 separate circuits requiring 4 hot wires, 1 ground, 1 neutral)

With all electrical, especially something like 240 volts that is being used in conjunction with water, it is very important to use a licensed, insured electrician for installation. We can’t stress this enough. If the electrician is even slightly unfamiliar with what needs to be done, please, please, please have them contact us. We are happy to help. We also have a very handy pre-delivery guide with wiring schematics as well as actual pictures of what the electrical should look like when complete.  For more details on what needs to be done for your hot tub electrical installation, please click here.

What does SpaGuard TRIO do?

SpaGuard TRIO

SpaGuard TRIO

A couple times a week we get someone asking what SpaGuard TRIO does for their hot tub. So we thought we would take a few minutes to explain the benefits of what TRIO does and how it not only makes water care easier, but it also prolongs the life of your hot tub components.

When you first open you TRIO box, you will notice it contains three distinct compartments of product. In the first is the TRIO startup packet. This packet first contains a proprietary blend of water softening agents. This will give your water that “soft” feeling without stripping your water of vital calcium which is required to keep your water balanced. This packet also does a couple other things. It prevents said calcium as well as minerals from accumulating on your hot tubs equipment making the most important parts of your hot tub last longer. It also helps to prevent biofilms, the protective layer around bacteria, from forming in your hot tub. This means less demand on the sanitizer you use with TRIO keeping your hot tub cleaner. The last thing this packet does is prevent your pH from drifting meaning less time spent adjusting your water chemistry. Oh yeah, its smells good too!

The next compartment contains 12 smaller packets. These are to be use once a week, no measuring required. These all contain a small amount of the same blend from packet number one, as well as an oxidizer to break down contaminants like sweat, skin, and body oil. This means your water is cleaner, clearer, and more sanitary.

Your last compartment contains the third step of SpaGuard TRIO. This is the purge packet and is there to be used prior to draining your hot tub. Simply add this last packet, run your hot tub for 20 minutes, then drain. This clears all of your plumbing of any organics in the water and insures pristine water on fill up.

For any further assistance on how to use TRIO, feel free to contact us or even order TRIO from our online store here.

Hot Tub Shopping

hot tub shopping in san diego

Choosing the perfect hot tub for you and your family can be a confusing and time-consuming task, especially with so many models and brand options to choose from all across the US. The entire process of hot tub shopping can be fun and sometimes overwhelming too.

At our store, our main mission is to provide you with a unique shopping experience unlike any other. However, if you are still unsure, then here are some factors that can help you on your next shopping day for hot tubs in San Diego.

1.    Test the Hot Tub

This is something that most people don’t think about or even consider, but it is advisable that you try or test the hot tub by taking a soak. This process actually tells you a lot about the hot tub you wish to purchase. Usually, people have the misconception that all hot tubs are alike, and their function has to be the same. The reality here is that manufacturers add different details to hot tubs. Some may have proprietary hydrotherapy jetting, which can help by giving you a remarkable massage experience each time you use it.

The unique jetting among therapy jets becomes evident when you test the soak; however, another factor also plays an important role. Portable hot tubs have their own seating designs and molds, which in-ground hot tubs don’t have. Apart from this point, not every individual person has the same length of arms and legs. Some of us feel comfortable when we sit up and some while reclining. If you take a hot tub soak test, you can know whether the hot tub is ideal for your body type or not.

2.    Costs Matter

Whether this is the first time you purchase a hot tub, no matter if it’s large or a small one, it is important that the best ones provide you with many years of pleasure and entertainment, without you having to worry about spending a fortune to make it run. Just make sure that you pay special attention to the construction quality, and material of the tub. You should know that the actual cost to run hot tubs depend on how often you heat and maintain the water.

Usually, if the hot tub comes with better insulation, it will also retain heat better. If it uses a higher grade of plastics in the jets and plumbing, they will last longer. If it uses stronger shell materials, it will stand the test of time. All of those things cost something so you should know that the quality and material of the Jacuzzi is what affects the prices as well as your experience. With further enhancements like insulation, electronics, jetting technology and more, the prices will also reflect changes.

3.    Location Matters

Hot tubs come in different sizes, so before you decide to pick one for your home, decide on the place you wish to install it. You can decide to install it outside, but consider ease of access. For example, during winter days it could be chilly so the closer it is to your back door the more inclined you will be to use it. You could install it into your deck or any place convenient for you, just make sure you leave room for any future service access.
